Each poem takes for its subject as a single film and attempts to enact a kind of aberrant intersemiotic translation between the mediums of popular or arthouse cinema and contemporary, modernist poetry. The poems often aim to reimagine moving image in language, to comment, interpret, reflect, embody, distinguish and transpose. They explore films familiar to most, and dig out, often European cinema, known to those only interested in the genre. Strange, playful, amusing and literary, this is another entry into SJ Fowler’s use of poetry to echo and reproduce a subject, a medium, a world.
